Hi, I see you want to learn a new skill.
You must be procrastinating as you think it’s time consuming/ difficult/ or you just don’t have the materials for it.
Well, ITS TIME TO START NOW!
Step 1: Get your gears
All you need are these things:
- Crochet hook
- Yarn
- Scissors
- Crochet Needle
- Stitch Marker (optional)
- Stuffing (optional)
Crochet hook – A size 5.0 mm or 5.5 mm hook is recommended for beginners as it is bigger. Personally, I started with a size 3.0mm, and it was fine, so do not worry so much about the size!
Yarn – A crochet hook should match the yarn size. Below is a clear video explaining what size yarn you should get:
Hence, if you’re getting a 5.0 mm hook ➡️ get a 5.0 mm yarn
Crochet Needle – Used especially for Amigurumi (crocheting soft toys). You can get it first as it will be needed as you progress.
Stitch Marker – Basically a plastic version of a safety pin, they are super useful when making rounds or circle shapes in crochet. You could use a paper clip or safety clip instead if you don’t want to buy.
Stuffing – When you want to make stuffed items.
⭐So where can I get them? Well, I don’t know where you live and if there’s a shop nearby, but you can get them online of course. Here are some shops I go to for my materials:
Step 2: Familiarize with the basics

Part 1
These are the techniques you will learn in the video:
- Slip knot
- Chain (ch) – this video shows how to do a slip knot and chain
- Single crochet (SC)
- SC (front loop only) – shows how to sc after your first 10 chains
- SC (normal) – shows how to continue your first layer of single crochets by turning and chaining 1
- Here you can repeat the normal single crochets until you get a square/ rectangle of single crochets
- Slip stitch (SL ST) – [watch until 1:45 mins]
- Fasten off
Part 2
These are the new techniques you will learn in the video:
Part 3 – Make a circular coaster
- Magic ring (MR)
- *Double crochet increase (dc inc) – basically two double crochets in one stitch
*An increase crochet is just two crochets in one stitch, so it can also be single crochet increase or triple crochet increase
Part 4 – Extras
There are other types of stitches, but these are the main ones I have encountered so far. If the linked videos are unclear to you, you can search other videos/ resources online. Keep practicing, and you will be un-noobed.
Step 3: Start new projects!
If you have followed the tutorials above, you would have completed 3 projects and touched on the different techniques and stitches.
